Apollo 11 Ascent From Tranquility Base – rotation-corrected for proper “horizon up” viewing

This presentation shows the 16mm Data Acquisition Camera (DAC) footage that was shot during the Apollo 11 ascent from Tranquility Base. In this ascent footage, the DAC motion picture camera was mounted in the right side forward-facing (LMP) window of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module “Eagle”, providing us a view looking down at the Moon’s surface as the LM ascent stage fires and sends the spacecraft on its way back up to lunar orbit for rendezvous and docking with the CSM “Columbia”. Rather than just showing the raw footage here as it is cataloged in the NASA film archives, I instead show the footage in a rotation-corrected format in order to always keep the scene in it’s proper “horizon up” viewing orientation throughout the duration of the clip. This proper “horizon up” perspective can be established based on some simple visual criteria, with the goal being to ensure we are viewing the footage with the lunar surface being shown so that the Moon’s horizon that is closest to the camera’s current principle point always remains aligned and level towards the top of the field-of-view (even if the horizon itself is not actually visible at the time). This ensures that the surface scene you are viewing can be accurately interpreted. As you can see in this footage, the rotation correction to align the scene to the “horizon up” viewing perspective is an absolutely vital adjustment that must be applied first in order to be able to even begin attempting to analyze and interpret scenes such …

Can someone explain to me why the footage appears to be “swinging”? It’s as if the LM is moving in spurts, stop-go, stop-go, almost like being on the shoulder of a giant as it steps. Anyone know why that would be the case — part of the fake footage or an actual physical phenomenon on the moon? Thanks …

@antimatterXXXIII YES! There is some great commentary in the NASA journal (Fjeld et al) that addresses this problem. It’s amazing that the delta-V burn profile wasn’t affected too adversely. Feedback control is a wonderful thing.

The back-and-forth wallowing is caused by fuel sloshing around in the very lightweight LM’s tanks. Later LM fuel tanks used baffles to inhibit the sloshing.

None of the LMPs other than Edgar Mitchell had much luck with that stupid DAC! I think they bought’em at K-Mart and trained the astronauts to use them at the local Sears Photo Studio

I’m not speculating here, because the simplest and most logical explanation is usually correct.
Unless someone so badly WANTS TO believe in a conspiracy, then sure – entire alien cities must have been cropped out from the photos, blurred out in the descen/ascend videos and so on, a common crap found on virtually every reel of film ever made will become alien “blue beam” LOL Whatever makes you happy

Hi friend. Last night i finally saw the light and just now by watching this video i saw them easily with the eye at between frame 7.24 and 7.25 blue beam..
I’m guessing with your technique you could show us much more depth to it. I would love to see it enhanced and in slow motion..

Thumbs up to Luna’s hard work, but i agree with this, It speeds up & slows down because it is ARTIFICIAL & was done in a studio in nevada desert. Spielberg worked on this movie didn’t you know? Proof is there that US never went to the moon, the links/archives/testimonies/documentaries i like many have and ppl can say all they want US did (why they never been back?) they obviously like to ignore the tremendous evidence given by top men of integrity who are still alive & tell the truth, not lies.

Important note to everyone: do NOT use your brain and ask yourself the question what these lights are. There is absolutely NO need to do so. These are just icecristals, reflections of light from within the craft, swamp gas, venus, mars, satellites. Also in one of the missions, the astronauts dropped their flashlights while they were still on. It is believed these flashlights now orbit around the moon. NASA is currently investigating these flashlights, so you will get a straight answer soon.
